Generally, commissioned work - whether landscapes, still life, or portrait - is priced by size. The smallest oil paintings start at about $600 and the largest can go up to $4,000 or higher. Drawings begin at $300. Framing and shipping are extra.
Loosely, the price of a commissioned work is a little over $11.00 per square inch, unframed. The smaller paintings are a tad more expensive because much of a painting’s success depends on how well the composition is set up, regardless of its size. Good composition takes time, thought, and experimentation. The bigger paintings are a tad cheaper, so as not to break the bank.
I have painted people and animal portraits, an enormous landscape of Pont Neuf in Paris, a wedding anniversary bouquet, and a beloved childhood home on commission, to give you a few examples. You can commission a work of any size, but here are some standard sizes and prices for oil paintings and drawings. Drawings are about half the price of paintings.
